I've always assumed that if I could just have a one-on-one, unvarnished conversation with a given politician, one which s/he was convinced would be kept totally off the record, I could get him/her to admit to a variety of "actual" beliefs that run counter to stated positions. Like, Hillary would have privately admitted that she was out of it in March, or Barack would admit that the FISA thing's about repositioning, and he doesn't think undermining the entire concept of the "rule of law" (retroactive immunity) is a good idea. Lately, though, I've begun to realize - some would say shockingly late - that the brand of human who becomes a successful, high-level politician (or political operative), has a virtually infinite capacity for self-delusion. They believe what they say, each and every day, no matter what was said yesterday. McAuliffe meant it at the time:
